Protests in Naivasha over donkey meat

Butchery and slaughterhouse operators in Naivasha last week went on a go-slow to protest against reports that donkey meat was being sold in the area, claims they said led to poor sales of meat in the town. The operators said that the sale of meat in the town had dropped by over 50 per cent in the previous three days after allegations that four donkeys found slaughtered in Kikopey area had been sold to butchers in Naivasha. The angry operators denied they were selling donkey meat, saying the meat they were selling had been certified by the area Public Health Officers. The traders also took issue with the owners of the four donkeys found slaughtered in Kikopey area for alleging that the meat had found market into Naivasha town. They said the intention of the owners of the donkeys was to spoil the business. They appealed to the police and the Public Health Officers in the area to urgently intervene and save the situation. The Chairman, Naivasha Butcheries Welfare Association Douglas Ng’ang’a said customers had drastically dropped and were avoiding buying meat.
