Three face murder charges over discovered body in Umoja

The main suspect in the killing of an unidentified woman in Umoja, Nairobi has been charged with murder.

David Migwi Kariuki denied the charges from a police cell where he is being held over fear of Covid-19 spread.

The proceedings were done virtually, and the judge ruled that Migwi be held at the cells pending hearing on July 23 on his bail application.

The prosecution said it was looking for more suspects in connection with the murder and opposed the release of the suspect. The woman is yet to be identified.

Two other suspects had been charged with the murder of the woman. Nancy Wanja Njuguna and Nicholas Kimanthi were charged with an offence of accessory after the act to murder before a Milimani Court, Nairobi.

According to court papers, the accused were charged with assisting Migwi by disposing of the body in order to enable him (Migwi) escape punishment.

Ms Njuguna through his lawyer said the main suspect in the murder had been charged and his client was ready to appear in court any day when needed.

They were granted a cash bail of Sh100,000 or bond of Sh200,000 with a surety of the same amount. The case will be mentioned on July 1.

Ms Njuguna was  Migwi's landlady.

A decomposing body of unknown woman adult was found mutilated and dumped at Tumaini Primary in Umoja on May 31.

Police said the suspect had rented a house in Amani Court of Umoja and was evicted from his house by the landlord after failing to pay April rent.

Migwi managed to access the house where he picked some of his belongings leaving behind huge wedding decor material and a blue water tank.

The same house is where the smell of the mutilated body had originated, police said.

Police said they are yet to identify the woman and know the motive of the murder.

The same suspect is believed to have committed other murders which are still in court.

For instance, he was captured on CCTV footage leaving Green Club along Latema road in Nairobi on April 26, 2019, walking out of the club with Penina Wairimu Njeri, aged 36 years whose body parts were found at Tumaini while the torso was recovered along Landhies road near country bus on April 29, 2019.

DNA analysis led to the pairing of body parts and identification.
