Maize saga exposed a regime pulling apart

Letters

Government’s final decision to ship the consignment of maize back to South Africa, where it was imported from, is appropriate.

However, this leaves two issues unclear: the controversy over who was responsible for the import and the conflicting reports on the consignment’s safety for human consumption.

If the Government is convinced that the consignment was not fit for consumption, it should demand explanation from the South African authorities.

Any intelligent Kenyan who watched the debate on maize in Parliament was left disappointed.

Without belabouring the point, it was clear politicians are only interested in their own welfare and feel nothing for Kenya and Kenyans.

However, politicising the maize issue wasn’t the best way for the MPs to solve the problem. They should not imagine they can play poker with lives of millions of Kenyans and get away with it.

And though the Government has finally decided to return the controversial consignment, it should also put its act together and enforce systems that will unite its officials to stop issuing mixed signals on such grave matters.

It should address the rift between PNU and ODM leaders who seem to read from different scripts on matters of national interest.

Concerned Kenyan, Nairobi.
