Golfers were enthusiastic as the Standard County Golf Classic series fifth leg teed off at the Par-70 Nyanza Golf Club on yesterday.

Many golfers turned up as early as 6.30am to participate in the tournament whose organisation they said was above par.

Sam Deya, a Nyanza and Thika golfer, said he was happy with the organisation of the golf tournament and was expecting to do well.

“We had prior information about the tournament and I am happy that even yesterday there was a big story about the same,” said Deya.

He added: “The Standard Group staff came early and some of us found them at the golf club ready to hand us the cards and t-shirts,” he added.

Sam Onyango, popularly known as SM at the club, said:

“The tournament is good, but the game has started getting tough. Last year the tournament was held at a period when rains were pounding the region but now the greens are dry, posing difficulty to a beautiful play.”

Fredrick Otieno, the the chief executive officer, Kebay Holdings, a company that deals with pest control in the Western region, said the Standard County Golf Classic was one of the best that has been held at the par-70.

“Standard County Golf Classic is the best tournament we have had at the club so far. I am happy with its organisation and the interaction that we have had with the staff of the company. I am also happy that we are playing with Joseph Yego, the Standard Group Nakuru team leader and Charles Otieno, the Managing Editor of The Nairobian. We just read some of these names in the newspaper,” said Otieno.

Wycliffe Nyambogo, a son to the oldest Nyanza golfer, Lucas Nyambogo, said meals were sumptuous and congratulated the Standard Group for making the tournament a reality.

Beatrice Bisonga, a Kakamega golfer who works with Kenya Revenue Authority in Kakamega, said she was happy with the organisation and the good t-shirts the Standard team handed them.

“White t-shirt is a symbol of peace. We need to encourage sports as a way of uniting Kenyans,” said Bisonga.

Irene Kimani, the Standard Group Commercial Director, Grace Kabbis, the group’s the Commercial Manager, Charles Otieno the Managing Editor Nairobian, Naomi Kosgey of the Corporate Affairs Office, Judy Yego, the personal assistant to the Standard Group CEO Sam Shollei, John Ngaruiya, organiser of the Standard Group series and Nyanza Bureau Chief Frank Otieno graced the occasion.

Frank Otieno, said golf brings people from different backgrounds together and he was happy that the Standard Group had given golfers an opportunity to explore and bond.
“Golf is a prestigious game whereby people meet to bond.

It’s also a game where businesspeople meet to brainstorm on issues and as the regional head am happy to meet some of the business community at the club,” said Otieno.
