SDL Junior Open 2012

It was a busy weekend for young tennis players who gathered at Parklands Sports Club last weekend for Sohail Development Limited Junior Open.

Linet Ndemo from Laini Saba Primary School managed to win a trophy in the girls’ under 12 category and lost her doubles in the semi finals with Millicent Wanjiku.

"I’m happy I won a trophy today. The competition was hard and I know I did my best even though we lost in the doubles. I was using this tournament to prepare for the Tennis Kenya Open this week hoping that I will win more trophies this year," said Ndemo.

The 11-year-old has big dreams, among them to be a great tennis player like her role model Serena Williams in the near future.

"I like Serena because she is a powerful and determined tennis player. I usually watch her play and I like the way she serves and the power she puts on her shots. She is great and I would love to play like her when I grow up," added Ndemo.

For Millicent Wanjiku, a Standard Five pupil from Mbagati Primary School, her weekend was not good at all since she lost all her games in the semis finals.

"I feel bad, but I will put more effort this coming week in the Kenya Open to win a trophy. I have not won any trophy since the year began and this shows how badly I need a win," said Wanjiku.

Wanjiku notes that she will be using some tricks like using drop shots to make her opponent run in the court to gain more points.

The 12-year-old training at Parklands Sports Club every Saturday with her club members, the Zion Zone Tennis Foundation.
