Manchester United are on course for a tough Champions League play-off after the full list of possible opponents was confirmed.

Louis van Gaal's side will be seeded for the draw in Nyon on August 7 - but could still face Lazio, Monaco, Sporting Lisbon or CSKA Moscow, report the Manchester Evening News.

They will avoid Valencia, Bayer Leverkusen, Shakhtar Donetsk and Ajax thanks to their high UEFA coeffiecent.

But Monaco, Sporting, CSKA, and Lazio - who booked their place with a 4-2 win over Napoli in their final game of the season on Sunday - are ranked lower and could be paired with United for the two-legged tie at the end of August.

United could also face Brugge, Young Boys, Sparta Prague, Fenerbahce, Rapid Vienna and Panathinaikos.

The first leg of the play-off is scheduled for August 18 or 19 with the second leg staged on August 25 or 26. If United were to lose their play-off, they would go straight into the Europa League group stage.

United have previously played LKS Lodz (1998), Zalagerszeg (2002), Dinamo Bucharest (2004) and Debrecen (2005) in August qualifiers.

Should United qualify for the group stage, they will be in pot two for the first time in 17 years.

Changes to UEFA's seeding system mean only teams who have won their national title will be in pot one when the draw for the group stage is made in Monaco on August 27.

It means Barcelona, Bayern Munich, Chelsea, Juventus, PSG, Benfica, Zenit and PSV Eindhoven have all been confirmed as seeds.

The group stage is scheduled to start on September 15-16 with the final game due to be played on December 8-9.

The final is set for May 28 at the San Siro in Milan.

Manchester United's possible play-off opponents are; Lazio, Monaco, Sporting Lisbon, CSKA Moscow, Brugge, Young Boys, Sparta Prague, Fenerbahce, Rapid Vienna or Panathinaikos
