A grand affair

How did you meet?

Liz: We first met at the University of Nairobi. George is a sales and marketing manager while I’m a senior marketing executive. So he was my client at some point.

How was the proposal?

It was awesome! I was flown to Sopa Lodge in Samburu for a surprise party and that’s where he gave me the ring in front of a live band.

Why did you accept the marriage proposal?

He is the true definition of tall, dark and handsome, with dimples, God fearing, smart, mature and faithful.

Why did you choose fuchsia and blue as your theme colours?

I am daring and I love unique, bright colours, fuchsia being my favourite. Our traditional ceremonies were all done in the same colours, from the tent dÈcor to our traditional attires.

What informed your choice of theme, venue and service providers?

Previous experience with friends’ weddings, Eve Bridal and my sister who also had a colourful wedding a year ago influenced our choice.

How did your wedding day go?

I woke up at around 6am, did a check with my best maid to ensure all was okay then took some yoghurt as I was prepared to dance and smile all day. After dressing up my in-laws came to pick me, then huh, I saw a long lovely limousine that George had organised without my knowledge. It had our names on the plates, a saluting chauffer, red carpet and security. This ferried me to church.

After the vows, the dancing began. It was very entertaining and everyone put their best foot forward. The speeches were well cut, the cake was perfect and all went well as set out for a prince and a princess. The evening party was one of its kind; we saw the best dance styles on the floor. We had many guests and we partied from 7.30pm till dawn.

What part did you love most about the whole process of planning and having the wedding?

The surprise limo was a show-stopper!

Did you have any fears about the day?

Yes, we weren’t sure about the weather but thank God it was a sunny day.

Any tips to share with other brides and grooms?

Ensure everything is ready at least four weeks before the wedding. Check with all the suppliers that all is on course. Food and drinks should be in excess.

What is the most overrated thing in weddings?

The cost. People exaggerate it. We had one elegant wedding at less cost than expected. We spent close to Sh1.1million but had expected to spend Sh1.5million

What’s the most important thing you learnt from your counsellor?

Marriage is a lesson where they give certificates before completion of the course. Being fresh, both of us have a learner’s (L) sign.

Honeymoon?

Awesome is an understatement. This world is extremely beautiful.
