Twenty-eight students from Nyandarua County have received Wings to Fly scholarships.

The students are part of the 16,168 who have so far benefitted from the initiative facilitated by the Equity Group, MasterCard Foundation and the German government.

Speaking when he announced the beneficiaries yesterday, Equity Bank's Ol Kalou branch manager, Pius Gitau, said the students will have all the costs of their education met.

“Parents and guardians will only provide moral support for these children since the rest of the costs, including pocket money and uniform, will be taken care of by the scholarship,” said Mr Gitau.

The young scholars will attend a two-week seminar in Nairobi to prepare them for the change of environment, as well as how to cope with secondary school education.

Karanja Guchu, a casual labourer, had his daughter selected among the beneficiaries of the scholarship. She scored 370 marks out of 500 after sitting her exams at Mubao Primary School in Kipipiri Constituency.

“I am thankful to God, first for giving my daughter the gift of being smart and for bringing sponsors and well-wishers within our reach since this has given us hope that one day our lives will change,” said Mr Guchu.

He said his earnings would not have been enough to cater for his daughter’s education while also supporting his family.

The scholarship will be officially be launched on January 3 next year in Nairobi.
