Gloria Kerubo, 14 whose agony of lacking school fees was featured in The Standard on Wednesday has received a full scholarship courtesy of Equity bank’s Wings to Fly Program.

Equity Bank Kisii Branch Manager Robinson Mirieri confirmed that the Kerubo was among the 12 students from Kisii County who had joined the program.

Speaking to the Standard in his office, Mirieri said the officials from the Bank and members of the selection committee had visited Kerubo’s home in Kisii South and confirmed that she deserved getting help.

“We had more than 400 applications but managed to have 12.  We have an increasing number of needy cases. Our wish is to have parents and guardians give true information,” said Mirieri.

Kerubo who was abandoned by her parents at a tender was staring at a bleak future even after scoring 430 marks out of the possible 500 in the 2018 Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE).

Kerubo, who was among the top performers in Kisii County, has been holding her breath hoping a well-wisher will offer to pay her school fees to join Kenya High School.

She sat her KCPE from Nyambunwa Academy in Kisii South where she had been topping her class for four straight years.

Her story is that of hope, determination and endurance. Her mother is alleged to have abandoned her eight months after birth. Three years later, her father followed suit.

She was left under the care of her grandmother Faith Kerubo.

“God has opened a way for my daughter. She is destined for greater heights,” her grandmother Faith Kerubo said.
