Crackdown on illegal colleges renewed

A regulator has started a crackdown on unlicensed colleges offering medical laboratory science courses. The Kenya Medical Laboratory Technicians and Technologists Board last week closed a college along Moi Avenue.

The board's officials, with the help of the Directorate of Criminal Investigations, arrested the principal of the Regional Institute of Business Management and two other lecturers who were teaching courses in microbiology and parasitology.

 James Sakwa, appointed by the board to head the unit, said the college was first closed in 2016. Besides the arrests, equipment, expired chemicals and records of 66 students were confiscated. “Even after we closed the school and put a notice they removed it and coerced...students to come back,” he said. The suspects will be charged with operating an illegal institution, he added.
