Unilever donates Sh2m to buy blind learners braille

By CHARLES NGENO

An initiative by Kilimanjaro Blind Trust (KBT) that seeks to ensure that every school-going visually impaired child gets a braille machine received a boost yesterday after Unilever donated over Sh2 million for the cause.

Unilever East Africa Corporate Affairs Manager Susan Njoroge said learners with special needs have not benefited from the free primary education because not much has been done to give to them learning facilities.

“There is need for learners with special needs to be allocated more funds under the free primary and secondary education so as to realise their dreams. Such learners continue to receive a raw deal because their rights are not observed though such rights are enshrined in the Constitution,” said Ms Njoroge.

She termed the move by KBT to purchase braille machines for visually impaired children as noble and called on other corporate players to assist in improving the lives of children especially those with special needs.

KBT East and Central Africa Co-ordinator Alex Kaluyu thanked Unilever for the donation, saying the move will impact positively on SNE learners.
