Tenth Parliament has soiled its reputation

The conduct of MPs over the past two days has ben nothing less than embarrassing.

After burning the midnight oil on Wednesday night to subvert the spirit of the Constitution, the so-called “Honourables” quickly changed tune in the morning.

The first reason for their change of heart was a withering response by the public to their selfish amendments to the Elections Act and Political Parties Act to guarantee their political futures.

The second reason was the realisation that future salaries of public officers will be pegged on, among other things, their level of education.

It was painful to watch grown men and women who hopped themselves lame late into the night turnaround and seek to undo their handiwork.

But even then, they ensured that they retained the amendment that would legalise their shameless party hopping.

The Tenth Parliament is an embarrassment to Kenya and most would not mind seeing its term end sooner rather than later.

On Thursday, the selfishness of the MPs was even more evident when they backed Motion by the Finance Minister to pass a Vote on Accounts.

Only a few MPs stood on the side of the law to point out that the minister should have first tabled an Appropriations Bill and even produced a High Court ruling to prove it, but to no avail.

It turns out most of the MPs who backed the motion did so because they wanted to ensure Treasury released the Constituency Development Funds so they can look like small lords when they go on recess.

Forget the high sounding arguments about the need to ensure the Government does not grind to a halt, a highly unlikely event in any case. This Parliament  has lost its moral compass. It is indeed a pity that Kenyans will have to bear with this circus for another seven months.
