Three people, who were travelling in a private vehicle, died on the spot in a road accident on the Mombasa-Nairobi highway at Tangu area in Salama, Makueni County.

Makueni County Police Commander Joseph Ole Napeiyan told The Standard the driver of the personal car, a Nissan X-Trail, was attempting to overtake other vehicles without checking oncoming traffic, resulting in a head-on collision with a truck.

The X-Trail was heading towards Nairobi from Mombasa, when the crash occurred at around 7am on Saturday, July 24.

Police say the truck driver escaped after the accident.

“Following the collision, the truck careened off the road and rammed another lorry. Due to the impact, the two heavy commercial vehicles overturned,” said Napeiyan.

Bodies of the private vehicle occupants, two men and a woman, were moved to Kilungu Sub-County Hospital morgue.

“We have launched a hunt for the lorry driver who escaped on foot,” Napeiyan said.
