Road accidents have claimed over 2,344 lives

At least 2,344 people have died as at September, according to the latest figures from the Traffic Department. The number shows an average of 260 people are killed per month.

If the trend continues to December, the final number is expected to be over 3,000 people, which will match or exceed an all-time record of 3,760. The disturbing figures show January as the deadliest month and June with the lowest number of fatalities. However, pedestrians are the most casualties and not public service vehicle  passengers, with 1,083 killed so far. Vehicle passengers follow at 604 and drivers at 212. The numbers confirm the rate of road accidents are rising every year. Analysts have attributed this to poor driving, increasing number of vehicles and failure to strictly enforce traffic laws.

Transport Principal Secretary Nduva Muli has promised new Government action that will encompass tougher enforcement and stricter laws to stem the tide.
