Kenya Editors’ Guild opposes draft media laws

By DAVID OHITO

The Kenya Editors’ Guild has strongly opposed attempts to have a Government body control media content as proposed by the Kenya Information and Communications Amendment Act.

KEG chairman Macharia Gaitho protested proposals to have Communications Commission of Kenya or its proposed successor the Communications Authority of Kenya regulate and control media content.

“The provisions for regulation of media content are contained in the Media Act. Editors supports self regulation as a best practice.” He said.

On restriction of media during emergencies, Mr Gaitho expressed fears that editors were worried because such avenues may be abused or be open to misuse.
