Construction of Sh1.2b marine college launched

The government is constructing a Sh1.2 billion marine training college. Mining, Blue Economy and Maritime Affairs Cabinet Secretary Salim Mvurya on Tuesday commissioned the project at Chitsakamatsa.

The flagship project, under the East Africa Skills for Transformation and Regional Integration Project, is being implemented by the government with funding from the World Bank.

The Kenya Coast National Polytechnic in Mombasa has been mandated to implement the project.

Mr Mvurya said about 90 per cent of the world trade relies on marine transport, and the government is determined to exploit opportunities in the sector.

He said the centre will develop competent graduates and fosters regional integration.

"Once complete, this centre of excellence will host students from Eastern Africa states, and it will create an opportunity for our youth to acquire relevant skills that will make them competent to take up opportunities provided by the maritime sector," he said.

The CS and the Principal Secretary for Vocational Education and Training Esther Muhoria called upon the youth from Coast region to take up the opportunity once the centre is ready.

"I ask the contractor for this project to give the locals first priority in employment available here. I also urge the people around here to invest in the construction of rental houses and business premises," said Mr Mvurya.

Governor Fatuma Achani asked county leaders to work together to ensure the project is successfully implemented.

"We have agreed to put aside our differences and work together as leaders of Kwale. Our people need development and that is what we are all focusing on for now," she said.
