Locals decry unplanned structures in Voi town

Residents and leaders have decried the mushrooming of unplanned structures in Voi town and its environs.

Governor John Mruttu said the haphazard structures were adversely affecting investment and growth of the town, which is the main economic hub of the region.

Mr Mruttu, Voi MP Jones Mlolwa and several MCAs have noted that the unplanned structures coupled with poor sewerage system was discouraging investors.

The town is strategically situated along the busy Mombasa-Nairobi highway and adjacent to the famous Tsavo National Park.

"The unplanned structures are hampering the growth of the town. Something needs to be done to rectify the worrying trend," said Mruttu.

The governor was speaking when he led hundreds of residents and local leaders in cleaning up the town and its environs yesterday.

"There is need to unclog the town's poor drainage system for easier flow of rainwater to avert a catastrophe especially with the highly publicized El Nino rains," he added.

Mr Mlolwa said the drainage systems in major towns need to be unclogged before the onset of El Nino rains.

Mbololo Ward Representative Godfrey Mwambi challenged the local business community to be at the forefront in maintaining cleanness of the town.

"The uncollected garbage littered all over the town has become an eyesore to tourists visiting Tsavo. The trend must stop if the region is to attract investors," said the ward representative.

Environment Executive Alexander Mwangeka said the filthiness of the town was putting the lives of the locals at risk.

"There is need to clear the mess in the town, which serves as a tourist destination owing to its proximity to Tsavo Park," said Mr Mwangeka.
