30 students from Kwale county get Equity scholarships

Mombasa, Kenya: Thirty students from Kwale County are among an estimated 2,000 beneficiaries of Equity Bank’s Wings to Fly initiative.

The learners left by bus on Tuesday afternoon to Nairobi where President Uhuru Kenyatta is expected to launch this year's awards on Friday.

In a ceremony presided over by branch manager Apollo Kiuri and Kwale Education Executive Mangale Chiforomodo on Tuesday, the scholarship winners were warned against slackening in their studies leading to poor results.

“We usually do termly reviews on these beneficiaries and it is saddening that after scoring over 400 marks once they settle in some of the national schools, our students perform poorly with some getting Ds,” noted Chiforomodo.

Mr Kiuri congratulated those who had made it saying more opportunities, including jobs, awaited them.

Chiforomodo observed that Equity Bank was complementing the county government scholarship.

Last year, 258 students qualified for national schools, with Equity Bank sponsoring 30 and the county supporting the rest.
