PS Wairagu: Irrigation projects to benefit locals

The government will fund irrigation projects in Murang’a as part of the compensation for the water the county provides Nairobi. Water and Irrigation PS Joseph Wairagu said as a major source of the water used in the capital, it was important that the county also benefits from the commodity, through irrigation, among other projects.

“The Government has already allocated funds to some of the projects to enable residents to produce enough food and also have enough water for other uses, including domestic,” the PS said.

Wairagu spoke in Kiharu and Maragua when he inspected areas pipelines for some of the projects will pass. He noted that President Uhuru Kenyatta has prioritised food security, in line with the Big Four Agenda, hence the special focus on irrigation.

“In Murang’a, the government has launched several irrigation projects that will cost millions of shillings. They have been designed to benefit hundreds of residents,” said Wairagu.

He also visited projects in Nginda, Mirira, and Mukurwe wa Nyagathanga. He added: “These projects will also act as compensation for Northern Water Collector Tunnel that will fetch 140,000 cubic metres of water for transmission through Ndakaini Dam.”
