Chief Justice Evan Gicheru has been critisised for telling lawyers to respect judges.

East African Law Society Secretary General, Mr James Mwamu, said respect must be mutual and judges must stop running the judiciary like a military barrack.

He reminded judges and magistrates that there is a movement in the legal profession, where one who serves in the bench may end up in the bar.

On claims that some lawyers use flimsy excuses to have their cases adjourned, Mwamu said judges and magistrates have powers to merit the reasons given to them.

He told Meru judge Murugi Mugo that asking litigants to hire other lawyers would not solve the problem in her station.

Early this week, Justice Mugo urged litigants represented by boycotting lawyers to disengage them to expedite determination of their cases.
