Tragedy in Trans Nzoia as minor sent home for fees is raped and murdered

A 7-year-old in Naikara Chebukaka village, Trans Nzoia County, was brutally raped and murdered after being sent home from school for unpaid tuition fees.

This is the second such devastating incident in the area within two months.

The girl's grandmother, Margaret Wafula, recounted the harrowing sequence of events.

The pupil was sent home on a Wednesday with a balance of Sh3,000 in school fees.

When she didn't return home, a frantic search began. Ms Wafula's search led her to one of the homes in the village, where a friend of her granddaughter informed her that she had been sent home at 9 a.m.

The community quickly mobilized to help, leading to the grim discovery of the girl's body in a nearby maize farm.

"Her jacket was found on the roadside, and her body in a maize plantation bore signs of a horrific attack," a shaken Ms Wafula told The Standard Digital.

The gruesome discovery ignited a firestorm of protest from villagers, who blamed the local police for their perceived negligence.

Their outrage is amplified by a similar incident two months prior, where a 4-year-old was also raped and murdered with no arrests made. The situation escalated when police reportedly used tear gas and live rounds to disperse the angry crowd.

Luke Naibei, the Chairman of the Health Committee in Trans Nzoia County, offered to help.

"The governor, George Natembeya, has committed to covering the costs of the autopsy and funeral," Naibei said.

"We are calling on Inspector General of Police, Douglas Kanja, to transfer long-serving security officers who have shown a lack of action."

A frustrated local, Duncan Buheba, lamented the apparent impunity of these crimes.

"Three other people have been killed here in the past three years, and there have been no arrests or prosecutions," he stated.

The tragedy has prompted a wave of condemnation from political and community leaders. Opinion leader Dorothy Mikisi and Trans Nzoia women's representative Lillian Siyoi both denounced the incident as a gross violation of children's rights.

Siyoi has demanded a "thorough investigation to arrest and prosecute the suspect."

Area Member of Parliament, Caleb Amisi, also weighed in, shifting some of the focus onto the practice of sending students home for fees.

"Students should not be sent home for fees, as it puts them in danger. I suggest that schools should instead send a written notice home with the students for their parents to pick up. Amisi said.

Trans Nzoia West OCPD, Erick Ng'etich, urged citizens to remain calm, assuring them that investigations are ongoing to arrest all those involved in the rape and murder.
