Five suspected drug traffickers were arrested in separate operations conducted in Mombasa, Kitengela and Busia as law enforcement agencies intensified efforts to combat the illegal narcotics trade across the country.

The arrests followed intelligence-led operations by detectives and police officers, who recovered large quantities of cannabis sativa believed to have been destined for distribution in various parts of the country.

In Mombasa, detectives from the Anti-Narcotics Unit intercepted a lorry, registration number KDL 220P, following a tip-off from members of the public and intelligence reports. A thorough search of the vehicle led to the recovery of nine sacks containing cannabis sativa weighing approximately 450 kilograms.

Police estimated the street value of the consignment at Sh12.15 million, making it one of the largest drug seizures recorded in the recent crackdown. The driver of the lorry and his alleged accomplice were arrested at the scene and taken into custody.

In a separate operation in Kitengela, detectives raided Hiney Pot Bar after receiving information that the premises were being used to store and distribute illegal drugs. During the raid, officers recovered two bales of cannabis sativa, 16 rolls of bhang and a clear polythene bag containing the substance.

The suspect was arrested and escorted to a nearby police station for processing. Police indicated that further investigations would determine whether the establishment was part of a wider distribution network operating within the region.

Meanwhile, in Busia County, officers mounted an ambush in the Butula Mission area after receiving intelligence regarding the movement of narcotics through the border county. The operation culminated in the interception of a motor vehicle, registration number KBR 254P and the recovery of two tightly packed sacks of cannabis sativa concealed inside.

The five suspects remain in police custody as detectives finalize investigations and prepare charges ahead of their arraignment in court. The recovered narcotics and impounded vehicles are being held as exhibits.

The latest arrests come amid heightened efforts by security agencies to dismantle drug trafficking networks and curb the spread of narcotics in communities across the country. Authorities reiterated their commitment to pursuing traffickers and disrupting supply chains that fuel drug abuse and related crimes.
