Covid-19: Kenya records 787 cases, 158 patients admitted in ICU

Kenya on Friday, July 23 recorded 787 new Covid-19 cases in the past 24 hours, from a sample of 6,892 raising the country's caseload to 195,898.

In a statement, Health Cabinet Secretary Mutahi Kagwe said the new infections take the country’s positivity rate to 11.4 per cent and cumulated tests conducted so far to 2,081,502.

Out of the new patients, 425 are male, whereas 362 are female, with the youngest carrier being a one-day-old infant, and the oldest aged 97.

Of the new cases, 37 are foreigners while the rest are Kenyans.

Distribution

In terms of counties distribution, Nairobi 338, Mombasa 60, Kiambu 59, Kilifi 36, Nandi36, Nakuru 32, Uasin Gishu 29, Siaya 25, Machakos 24, Busia 20, Kajiado 16, Muranga 15, Kericho 10, Garissa 10, Bungoma 8, Kakmega 7, Nyandarua 7, Embu 6, Kirinyaga, Kisumu, Homa Bay and Vihiga, 5 cases each, Kisii and Kitui 4 cases each, Bomet, Meru and Makueni 3 cases each, Baringo, Isiolo, Laikipia and Narok 2 cases each, Nyeri, Taita Taveta, Kwale and Trans Nzoia 1 case each.

Kenya’s Covid-19 toll reached 3,838 after 12 patients succumbed to the virus in the last 24 hours.

The total recoveries so far stand at 184,885 after 424 patients recovered from the disease in the last 24 hours with 293 from the Home-Based and Isolation care programme while 131 are from various health facilities in the country.

Of the total recoveries, 147,451 are from the Home Based Isolation Care programme while 37,434 are from various hospitals countrywide.

A total of 1,259 patients are currently admitted to various health facilities countrywide, while 3,758 patients are on Home Based Isolation and Care.

One hundred and fifty-eight (158) patients are in the ICU, 33 of whom are on ventilatory support and 73 on supplemental oxygen. Fifty-two (52) patients are on observation.

Another 373 patients are separately on supplemental oxygen with 337 of them in general wards and 36 in the High Dependency Unit (HDU).

Vaccination

Kenya has at July 23, 2021, administered 1,661,560 vaccines across the country.

Of these, the total first doses are 1,044,638 while the second doses are 616,992.

The uptake of the second dose by Priority Groups is as follows: Aged 58 years and above 192,784, Others 177,077, Health Workers 110,004, Teachers 88,185 while Security Officers are at 48,872.

The uptake of the second dose among those who received their first dose is at 59.9 per cent with the majority being males at 55 per cent while females are at 45 per cent. The proportion of adults fully vaccinated is 2.3 per cent.
