Smarter water technologies hold the key to ending Africa's hunger crisis

Across Africa, water has become the defining constraint shaping the continent’s food systems, economies and long-term stability.
Recent climate data shows the continent is warming faster than many parts of the world, with temperatures in 2024 rising about 0.86°C above the long-term average.
From Kenya to the Sahel, rainfall is increasingly erratic. Droughts are lasting longer, while floods are becoming more frequent and destructive.
In 2024 alone, for instance, floods wiped out vast areas of cropland in several countries, while droughts cut cereal production by up to 50 per cent in some regions.
The result is a growing cycle of reduced harvests, rising food imports and millions more people at risk of hunger.

Agriculture remains the backbone of many African economies, yet it is still heavily dependent on rainfall. Such dependence is no longer sustainable.
Only about six per cent of Africa’s agricultural land is irrigated, the lowest level in the world. This is even though expanding irrigation could double or even triple crop yields.
It would allow farmers to grow food during dry seasons, diversify into higher-value crops and build resilience against climate shocks.
Powerful lever
Controlling water, rather than waiting for rain, is the most powerful lever for transforming African agriculture.
Africa is often described as water-scarce, but that is only part of the story.
In many cases, water exists, but the real challenge is that it is not effectively captured, stored, treated or distributed.
Today’s water solutions are moving beyond isolated interventions such as boreholes or pumps. They are becoming integrated systems that connect water abstraction, storage, treatment, distribution and energy into one efficient chain.
These systems are quietly transforming access to water.
They draw from rivers, lakes and underground sources, move water over long distances, treat it to safe standards and deliver it where it is needed for households, livestock and irrigation. This is what turns water availability into water reliability.
For years, energy has been the missing link, and solar power is now changing that.
Diesel-powered pumping is costly and unsustainable, while grid electricity is often unreliable or unavailable in rural areas.
Without a dependable energy source, even abundant water resources remain underused.
Solar-powered water systems enable consistent pumping, treatment and distribution in off-grid areas, reduce operating costs and remove dependence on fuel.
More importantly, they allow farmers to irrigate predictably, even in remote locations, unlocking production that was previously out of reach.
Across East Africa, new-generation solutions are already demonstrating what is possible. Modular solar pumping systems, smart water storage and efficient distribution networks are being deployed to serve both communities and farms. These technologies are designed to work together, delivering water where it is needed, when it is needed, at a cost that farmers and utilities can sustain.
With reliable irrigation, farmers can move from subsistence to commercial production.
They can grow crops throughout the year, stabilise yields and invest in higher-value produce such as vegetables and horticulture.
This shift not only increases incomes but also improves nutrition and food availability.
Investments in small-scale irrigation alone could benefit up to 185 million people across Africa and generate billions of dollars in annual economic returns.
Digital tools are playing a quiet but important role in this transformation. Advances in weather forecasting, artificial intelligence and mobile technology are helping farmers access timely climate information.
Early warnings, seasonal forecasts and real-time data are improving decisions on when to plant, irrigate and harvest.
When combined with reliable water systems, this creates a powerful synergy where water is not only available, but also used intelligently. Africa’s food security will not be determined by how much rain falls. It will be determined by how well water is managed.
The continent already has the resources and the technology.
What is needed now is scale. Scaling investment in integrated water systems, access to irrigation, innovations that make water reliable, affordable and efficient, from solar-powered pumping and smart storage to decentralised treatment and distribution solutions already being rolled out across the region.
Ending hunger in Africa will depend on one critical shift from reliance on rainfall to control of water.
