Tyre Nichols case shows officers still fail to intervene

Protesters march Saturday, Jan. 28, 2023, in Memphis, Tenn., over the death of Tyre Nichols, who died after being beaten by Memphis police during a traffic stop. As Memphis police officers attacked Nichols, others held him down or milled about, even as he cried out in pain before his body went limp. Just like the attack on George Floyd in Minneapolis nearly three years ago, a simple intervention could have saved a life. Memphis and Minneapolis police departments are among many with "duty to intervene" policies. It's also the law. [AP]

As five Memphis police officers attacked Tyre Nichols with their feet, fists and a baton, others milled around at the scene, even as the 29-year-old cried out in pain and then slumped limply against the side of a car.
