Peacemaker dies from crash injuries

Mrs Dekha Ibrahim, credited with the prevailing peace in North Eastern Province died Thursday, a week after a fatal road accident that also claimed her husband and driver.

Dekha was travelling with her husband Dr Abdi Nur, an eye specialist, to Garissa last Thursday when their vehicle was involved in an accident with a lorry in Bangale along the Garissa-Nairobi road.

Dr Nur and their driver died on the spot while Dheka, 47, was transferred to Aga Khan Hospital where she lost the battle at 11am Thursday.

She was one of the founding members of Wajir Peace and Development Committee that brought together the warring clans in Wajir and later moved to other parts of the province, bringing to end bloody internecine wars.

She was awarded the Women for Noble Peace Prize in 2004 and the Kenya Peace Builder of the Year 2005 for her role in peace resolution in the country. She was buried in Nairobi in accordance with Muslim rites. The couple leaves behind four children.
