The Kenya Association of Women Judges has vowed to protect the rights of children by handing them justice.

Led by the association’s chairperson Lady Justice Roselyne Nambuye, the judges said they appreciated the importance of children in the society and promised to protect them.

"Children are the most important human beings in the society and we as women judges will ensure we protect them by seeing that they get justice," said Nambuye.

She was addressing more than 62 children in Mji wa Salama Children Home in Mombasa, where they donated computers.

The judges also acknowledged that bringing up children was a challenge, and thanked the home for supporting the children.

"Bringing up children is a challenge especially those coming from different backgrounds. Judges are human beings who do a lot of good things to children and will support them," she added.

The judges were accompanied by Mombasa Chief Magistrate Rosemelle Mutoka who said the Mombasa Law Courts were working closely with the home to give shelter and support for the children.

"Women judges are working to apply the Children’s Act for the benefit of children," said Ms Mutoka.

She said the society should appreciate the efforts of the Judiciary.

"The Judiciary is always being bashed but we want the country to see the human side of judges. We always do things that are beneficial to this country," she added.

At the same time, a representative from the provincial director Sarah Achani said there was an alarming number of child abuse cases in the province, most of which were as a result of neglect and poverty.
