'Dumb' man caught chatting

By Charles Ng’eno

A man, who had pretended to be deaf and dumb, was recently busted at a Bomet hotel after he loudly ordered for chicken.

The man had been walking around schools and shopping centers with a letter showing he was an orphan who was deaf and dumb.

He claimed he needed money to join a technical college and was conniving enough to even get an assistant chief to sign the letter he was using to con the public. Apparently, he had been in the con game for a while to even gain enough confidence to con school children.

On the said day, he visited a local primary school where his predicament moved teachers and pupils who contributed generously. He left the school with Sh3,000.

He took the next vehicle to Bomet town — about 20 kilometres away. It is reported that he booked himself a room to relax as he schemed for the next day.

As fate would have it, the hotel he went to for supper  belongs to a teacher of the school the ‘orphan’ had visited. After some pleasantries with the waiter, the supposedly dumb man ordered for chicken fry and chips.

The ‘orphan’ almost fainted when the teacher confronted him asking whether he had miraculously been cured of his disability. Cornered, the man took off.

Those present were left wondering how the man had convinced everyone including a government officer that he was deaf and dumb.
