VIP LOUNGE: Only politicians here please, legend Kip learns

National Olympic Committee of Kenya President Kipchoge Keino

Kenya’s track legend and National Olympic Committee-Kenya President Kipchoge Keino was forced to learn the hard way that his exploits on the track are not rewarding compared to if he was a politician.

While Team Kenya was waiting for the connecting flight to Rio Di Janeiro, Brazil, Keino thought of going to wait at the VIP lounge.

However, he was rudely turned away. “They say only ministers are allowed in this lounge,” a disappointed Keino said as he settled alongside other Team Kenya members. Maybe we need to make Keino a minister back home in Kenya.

The team had to wait for three hours at Luanda after arriving aboard Kenya Airways flight from Nairobi before boarding Angola Airlines to Tom Jobim International Airport in Rio Di Janeiro.

Elsewhere, The Rio de Janeiro Olympics kick off on Friday for some two weeks of competitive games drawing athletes as well as audiences from around the world.

As they prepare to cover the event, Reuters photographers will look back on their favourite pictures from past Olympics where they captured the action on the ground as well as the participants’ tears and joy that followed, Standard newspaper will bring you the very best of their Reuters’ offering.
