Three top energy chiefs arrested in substandard fuel probe

Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority boss Daniel Kiptoo, Kenya Pipeline Company Managing Director Joe Sang and Energy Principal Secretary Liban Mohame who spent the night at Gigiri Police Station.

The Director of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has arrested three senior government officials.

They include Petroleum Principal Secretary Liban Mohamed, Kenya Pipeline Company Managing Director Joe Sang, and Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA) CEO Daniel Kiptoo, who were arrested on Thursday evening over the alleged importation of substandard fuel.

Mohamed was grilled overnight at DCI Headquarters and later released on medical grounds, as of Fridayu afternoon, Kiptoo and Sang were still being questioned by detectives.

The identity of the fourth individual arrested in connection with the saga was later revealed to be Joseph Wafula Wepukhulu, the Deputy Director of Petroleum Economic Analysis.

They were arrested by detectives from DCI’s Operations Support Unit and were briefly held at Gigiri, Lang'ata and Capitol Hill Police Stations.

DCI boss Mohamed Amin confirmed the arrests, saying his officers were looking for dealers involved in the scheme.
