A 37-year-old man charged with defiling a nine-year-old girl who later died has been denied bond.

Peter Abuchei also faced an alternative charge of committing an indecent act with a minor. He pleaded not guilty to the offences and urged the court to consider his rights and grant him lenient bond terms.

However, Principal Magistrate Joseph Ndururi rejected the request, noting that there were compelling reasons not to release Abuchei on bond.

"Due to the issue of the security of the accused and other reasons, he will remain in custody as we proceed with the matter," said Ndururi.

The suspect, who was living with his mother near the girl's home in Nabongo, Kakamega, is said to have committed the offence on January 15, 2021.

The minor, a class three pupil, died a month later while undergoing treatment.
