Moses Kuria released from police custody

The outspoken Gatundu South MP South Moses Kuria (pictured) is finally a free man.

Kuria, who is facing assault charges, was released from Kilimani police station on Saturday evening on a Sh20, 000 cash bail.

He is due in court on Monday, January 13 at 08:00am.

The MP was arrested at around 10am yesterday by officers from the newly created DCI Special Service Unit (SSU) for allegedly assaulting Joyce Wanja alias Wagichungumwa at Royal Media Services studios last year.

Wanja, an activist who works as a media commentator has, in a video clip that has gone viral, claimed that the MP kicked and punched her while she was preparing for a TV debate.

It is not clear why it took a month since she recorded a statement with the police to arrest Moses Kuria.

Political strokes?

Kuria spent last night in police custody despite Milimani Senior Principal Magistrate Kennedy Cheruiyot ordering his release on a Sh50, 000 cash bail pending his arraignment.

A section of legislators stormed the police station to order for his immediate release but was repulsed in chaotic scenes choked in teargas.

The lawmakers, among them Kikuyu’s Kimani Ichungw’a, Nyali’s Mohammed Ali, Kandara’s Alice Wahome and Kiharu’s Ndindi Nyoro sensationally claimed Kuria was being detained over his political affiliation.

The MPs said Kuria’s woes were related to the politics of the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) and that he was on the receiving end of alleged frustration meted against supporters of Deputy President William Ruto.
