Four people have died after a matatu they were travelling in rolled at Davision area along the Njoro-Mau Narok road.

Speaking to The Standard, Njoro Sub County Police Commander Mohammed Huka said that the accident occurred after the matatu knocked down a pedestrian.

“A child aged two and a half years was crossing the road when the matatu which was heading to Njoro town knocked him down. The driver lost control of the vehicle which rolled injuring other passengers on board,” said Huka.

Huka said that the child died on the spot while three passengers succumbed to the injuries while they were being rushed to the hospital.

He added that four other adults suffered serious injuries and were being attended to at a private hospital in Njoro town.

“The driver is critically injured alongside three other passengers who have been taken to Newpoint Hospital in Njoro. We have launched investigations into the matter,” said Huka.

Area MCA George Kiere said: “It appeared as if the driver had not noticed the child who was crossing the road alone. The driver tried to avoid hitting the child but he was too close. The vehicle swerved and hit the child before rolling,” said Kiere.

The residents rushed to the scene and managed to cut through the mangled wreck to save the casualties who were struggling to free themselves.
