The Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) is putting up an ultra-modern treatment centre for soldiers in need of prolonged care for combat-related physical injuries and psychological trauma.
Families of soldiers will also be treated at the Langata Baracks-based facility, which is set to be completed next January.
Chief of Defence Forces General Samson Mwathethe said this was among measures the KDF command has put in place to address the welfare of troops.
Gen Mwathethe spoke on Monday at Langata Barracks where Defence Cabinet Secretary Raychelle Omamo led soldiers in marking the eighth KDF Day celebrations.
“KDF Day is the most important day in the our calendar. This is reflected on their idea of duty. Soldiers are patriotic and it is for us to thank them for their sacrifice,” said Ms Omamo.
The CS spoke of the importance of looking after the welfare of soldiers, and thanked those working in rehabilitation and welfare centres for striving to meet the needs of troops.
Soldiers who performed exceptionally well in their duties were awarded during the celebrations.
They included Lieutenant Colonel (Dr) Obadiah Yator who was recognised for his contribution to the management of combat stress and mental health of service personnel.
Lieutenant Colonel (Dr) Boniface Muyonde was feted for his efforts in the identification, treatment rehabilitation and return to duty of service members affected by psychological trauma.
Senior Sergeant Obare, who had driven for 10 years without an accident, was also recognised for exemplary devotion to service.
KDF Day is observed annually to commemorate and celebrate gallant soldiers for their service. It has been observed since October 2012, following the launch of Operation Linda Nchi in October 2011.
This year’s theme was 'Towards sustainable welfare for the Kenya Defence Forces fraternity'.
Several activities
This year's celebrations had several activities, including the unveiling of a monument to fallen soldiers, the laying of wreaths and the official opening of the Welfare Centre at Langata Barracks.
Various welfare departments within KDF also had display stands, where they showcased their various roles and how they can use the offices for their benefit.

Others who attended the celebrations included Defence Principal Secretary Ibrahim Mohammed, Vice Chief of Defence Forces Lieutenant General Robert Kibochi, Commander Kenya Army, Lieutenant General Walter Koipaton, Commander Kenya Air Force, Major General Francis Ogolla, and Commander Kenya Navy, Major General Levi Mghalu.
Retired generals, Inspector General of Police Hillary Mutyambai, Defence attachés, senior officers, officers, service men and their families were also among the guests at the event
