Student held for burying fetus in banana plantation

Police in Khwisero are holding a Form One student accused of procuring an abortion and burying the foetus in a banana plantation.

The 19-year-old girl was arrested on Wednesday at her grandfather’s home in Emulepa village.

“We received a tip-off about the incident from Nyumba Kumi community policing members and managed to exhume the foetus from a freshly-dug shallow grave,” area Chief Walter Mukungu said.

The girl was arrested while sleeping in her grandfather’s house.

“Police are waiting for a doctor’s report which will inform investigations before the suspect is arraigned,” said Mr Mukungu.

"Most young girls risk their lives through unsafe abortions and that is why we urge their parents to help them."

The chief said cases of early pregnancies among students have become rampant in the sub-county.

Meanwhile, police in Malava sub-county have arrested a 35-year-old man who allegedly sodomised a boy aged 14 at Shamberere village.

Locals said the boy had run away from home and was in the company of the suspect who allegedly promised to provide accommodation for him.

Malava OCPD Peter Mwanzo said examinations done at Malava Sub-county Hospital showed the teenager was sodomised.
