Police launch probe into killing of watchmen, foreigner in Kilifi

                           
 Police in Magarini in Kilifi have launched investigations into two incidents of murder of watchmen manning petrol stations in the area.
 
In the first incident, a 68-year-old man was murdered and his body discovered dumped near Tamani Jua hotel in Magarini Sub County on Tuesday.
 
Sabaki assistant chief Rachael Malindi said Wednesday that the body which appeared to have been strangled and was discovered early Tuesday was of Alfred Kashirihiri Gumbo, a resident of Vitengeni village in Ganze Sub County.
 
“It is said that he is a watchman at the Esir petrol station that is near Malindi Town and that he might have been killed by armed robbers who broke into the petrol station at night,” she said.
 
She called on residents to report to police any information that may lead to the arrest of Gumbo’s killers while at the same time calling for calmness in the area.
 
The body of the deceased was picked by police from the Malindi police station and taken to the Malindi Sub County hospital mortuary.
 
In the second incident, a 46-year-old man was killed at his work place on Tuesday night at Gongoni area in Magarini Sub County.
 
According to the chief of Gongoni, Bashehe Hussein Bashehe the deceased identified as Safari Menza was hit by a blunt object on the head before the killers made away with Sh10,000 after breaking into the petrol station he was manning.
 
He called on petrol station owners and other businessmen to install CCTV cameras in their premises so that criminal elements can be easily identified after an incident.
 
The body of the deceased was taken to the Malindi Sub County hospital mortuary.
 
Incidents of people being killed in Sabaki area have been on the increase in the recent past including the brutal murder of an Italian tourist whose body was dumped at the banks of River Sabaki.
 
The body of 65-year-old Renato Bettini, Italian tourist from Milano, was discovered in a hippo infested thicket at Moi village in Malindi Sub County, Kilifi County by fishermen who were on a fishing expedition at 5am.
 
Police officers from Malindi and Magarini sub counties visited the scene of the crime and picked the body that was ferried to a local morgue.
 
“We did not establish the identity of the deceased because there was no identification document found on him but investigations are ongoing to establish his origin which we suspect might be Italian,” said an officer at the scene.
 
The identity of the deceased is being followed closely by the Kenyan government and various foreign embassies in Kenya.
