Mother, child die in Mombasa-Nairobi highway crash

Two people died today in an accident at the junction connecting Machinery town, and the Mombasa-Nairobi highway.

A woman and her child died on the spot while the driver  sustained serious injuries after the vehicle they were travelling in was hit by a truck.

The accident occurred after the driver of the truck lost control of the vehicle following a tyre burst.

The vehicles were travelling from Mombasa headed to Nairobi.

Kibwezi Assistant County Commissioner Vitalis Ogur said: "A truck had a tyre burst before the driver lost control of the vehicle and hitting the private car from behind."

He called on truck drivers to be vigilant and assist in avoiding accidents that can be controlled through driving carefully.

The truck driver wasn't injured but the private car driver has been rushed to Kibwezi Amref hospital for treatment.

The two bodies were also collected and taken to Makindu hospital mortuary awaiting identification.
