Three people dead, one missing after boat accident in Migori

Three people died while one is still missing after their boat capsized at the delta of Lake Victoria and River Kuja on Tuesday.

According to Kakelo Kakoth Sub-Location Area Assistant Chief Mr Sospeter Oloo, the fishermen were coming from the normal daily fishing activities in the lake, while crossing river Kuja, and before reaching Kawo Beach, after which their boat capsized.

“They were over 10 people on the boat when they were coming back from fishing, the boat capsized next to Kawo Beach while they were trying to cross River Kuja,” Said Mr. Oloo

Mr. Oloo said that eight people were rescued by local divers and three were identified. The three were identified as Mary Adhiambo 24, Grace Adhiambo 26 and the boat rider, Mr. Wycliffe Otieno 26 drowned.

“The rescue team has managed to discover two bodies of Mary Adhiambo and Grace Adhiambo while they are still searching for the body of Wycliffe Otieno.

While speaking to the standard over the phone Nyatike OCPD John Musili said that the search for the third body is still going on through the help of local divers. He has also asked fishermen not to venture in the water without safety gears.

“It’s very important for the fishermen to seek first their safety before going to the lake. The boat must have capsized due to heavy load,” Said Mutsil.

From the time we were going on the press the bodies of the two women were still laying by shore of the lake at Kawo Beach.
