41 people have died of cholera since January, says WHO report

Cholera has killed 41 people this year in Kenya, according to an unofficial World Health Organisation report .

Some 1,910 cases of the disease have been reported across the country and the outbreak is still active in five counties, according to the report compiled by a team led by WHO’s Health Information and Risk Assessment Programme area manager, Dr Benido Impouma. 

The outbreak begun in 2017 and 4,079 cases were reported between January 1, 2017 and December 7, 2017.

The outbreak is still active in Garissa, Turkana, West Pokot, Trans Nzoia, and Tana River counties. The disease has been controlled in Mombasa, Kirinyaga, Siaya, Tharaka Nithi, Meru, Basia, and Murang'a, says the report.

Last week, Turkana Executive Jane Ajele confirmed that four people had died of cholera in the county.

In Ethiopia, the report said, 48,912 cases of acute watery diarrhoea and 880 deaths were reported in 2017.
