Pictures of pupils in flooded mud-walled class evoke mixed reactions

Kenyans on social media had a lot to say after pictures of school children sitting on building blocks on a flooded classroom touched the internet.

The pictures, taken by Humanitarian and activist Ndun’gu Nyoro showed primary school children from a school in Laikipia seated in a classroom which was evidently flooded, catching the attention of many.

The photos alleged to be of Kianjogu Primary School also showed the poor state of mud-walled classrooms and lack of proper seats despite the rain falling hard in most parts of the country. Another photo showed the state of the staffroom where teachers were not spared the harsh conditions either.

Where are the parents? Building and maintaining schools is a collective responsibility between the local government, parents and educators. If the parents came together one single day, they could patch the mud walls, drain the outside and compact the ground. Cost = Ksh0— mapinduzi (@MaasaiNation) March 22, 2018

A significant number of Kenyans find it easier, even sexier to donate to causes like building classrooms for these children and similarly demanding stuff, than demand simple accountability from the State. Civic laziness at its best

Beyond shameful.

We have bn in political mood for too long let politics be put aside we develop our country KENYA towards greater heights of developments...it's time to build Kenya siasa kado...— Zosky Wahu (@zosky_wahu) March 23, 2018

Poverty is all over Kenya. So next time your politicians tell you poverty is elsewhere, don’t believe them. It’s all over the country and we should hold our leaders accountable instead of fighting each other

It's disgusting to see such pictures. I just hope it's not that bad but things may not be that far from this situation in many places. Parents and the school community need to play their role of keeping their leaders accountable. Silence and sycophancy is killing development— ???????? Kabelo (@AKabelo) March 23, 2018

What a shame in this time of CDF and many funds, shame on the legislators from here amd Knut by extension

This is appalling! To pretend that we are development focused without satisfying the basics is lying to ourselves and corrupt!— Drone (@AndrewOrlando4) March 22, 2018
