An acute water shortage has hit Malindi town and its environs for the past three weeks.

A spot check revealed that the water shortage had led to poor hygiene among residents, and there is fear of an outbreak of waterborne diseases.

Local residents blamed the Malindi Water and Sewerage Company for the shortage, noting it was only keen on collecting water bills.

But the firm's MD Mawasco Jerald Mwambire said the issue was being addressed. He said their immediate concern was to clear a Sh18 million debt owed to Kenya Power Company.

“We have already paid Sh7 million and will clear the rest by next week,” he added.
