Hosts Homeboyz RFC, Menengai Oilers and Kenya Harlequin were the first teams to qualify into main cup quarter-finals at the Sepetuka Sevens, the fourth leg of the National Rugby Sevens series, at Eldoret Sports Club yesterday.

The three teams posted convincing wins in their opening two matches. It was a bad day for KCB, the Prinsloo Sevens champions, as they lost 5-29 to Impala Saracens.

Homeboyz, who entered the Sepetuka as series leaders with 51 points, taught Mean Machine some rugby lessons, beating them 26-12 in a pool A match after defeating Mount Kenya University (MKU) 29-10 in the first match.

MKU’s Kennedy Njoroge was the first to touch down but failed to convert. National Sevens player August Lugonzo cancelled the score after he received  a pass from Michael Wanjala who missed the conversion.

Geff Oluoch extended the lead for Homeboyz as Wanjala converted for a 12-07 lead at the break.

In the first minute of second half, Bob Muhati made the second try for MKU but they couldn’t get past the try line again as Oluoch and Wanjala exchanged the tries and conversions for a 29-10 victory.

Youthful Menengai Oilers squeezed narrow wins to glide into the quarters.

In the opening match, Oilers beat Nakuru RFC 17-12 before they edged out Blak Blad 26-24.

KCB bounced back to win the second match after losing the first one.
