Chances of Kenya hosting the 2018 African Championship (CHAN) have been thrown into a spin after Meru Governor Peter Munya told the national government to keep off construction of Kinoru Stadium, one of the venues earmarked for the continental event.
During a high-level CAF inspection tour led by Omari Selemani from Democratic Republic of Congo, FKF President Nick Mwendwa said the national government would embark on the second phase of construction.
“The county government has done what we asked them to do in the first phase and we are happy. The national government and the CHAN’s local organising commitment will undertake the second phase, including laying a new pitch,” said Mwendwa.

Governor Munya, however, said his administration would not accept the national government’s move to take over the completion of the Kinoru Stadium.
“We have seen in the newspaper the national government advertisement on the work they want to do here without our permission. They should concentrate on their work and let us do ours,” said Munya.
The governor, who was flanked by county’s Sports Executive Joy Muriungi and Infrastructure’s Newton Itobi, said the national government should hand over the funds for phase two to his administration since they are the ones who started the project.
“This stadium belongs to the county government of Meru. If they want to help us they should give us the money. County governments have their mandate and the national government has its own,” said Munya.
“We shall complete the remaining work,” he said.
