Donald Trump 'investigated' over possible obstruction of justice' in Russia probe

The investigation into Russia’s interference in last year’s US election is looking at whether Donald Trump attempted to obstruct justice, officials said.

According to American reports, special counsel Robert Mueller is now probing whether the President’s conduct was against the law.

If he is found to have interfered with the FBI investigation into Moscow's hacking of the election, it could pave the way for Trump to be impeached.

Mr Mueller is also alleged to be looking for any evidence of possible financial crimes among Trump associates, officials added.

The development is a major turning point in the year-old probe.

The investigation began looking into Trump’s conduct after he fired then FBI director, James Comey, who had been leading the inquiry.

The President had received private assurances from the then intelligence chief he was not personally under investigation.

But the position changed after Mr Comey was sacked on May 9.

Last week the White House began referring all questions about the Russia investigation to Trump’s personal lawyer, Marc Kasowitz.

On Monday, a friend of Trump’s, Christopher Ruddy, said the US leader was considering firing special counsel Mueller. a claim later denied by the President’s aides.

Already Mr Mueller’s team have begun scheduling interviews with intelligence officials indicating his team is actively pursuing potential witnesses inside and outside the government.

Testifying before the House Senate Intelligence Committee last week, Mr Comey said he took it is an order from the President when they met he was to drop the Russian investigation.

Mr Trump later denied the claim labelling his former FBI boss a “liar’.
