Chelsea unveil new stadium plans

Chelsea look set to play at Wembley from 2018 after the £500million redevelopment of Stamford Bridge was given the green light.

The Blues were granted planning permission by Hammersmith and Fulham council in January to build a new 60,000 capacity stadium.

Those plans were rubber-stamped by London Mayor Sadiq Khan on Monday morning, meaning Chelsea will have to find a new home for three years while work is carried out.

Wembley and Twickenham had been identified, although residents close to the home of rugby have opposed Chelsea moving due to fears over increased traffic and anti-social behaviour.

Wembley now looks set to host Chelsea matches for three seasons from 2018 onwards as work takes place at Stamford Bridge.

Khan said: “I’m confident this new stadium will be a jewel in London’s sporting crown and will attract visitors and football fans from around the world.”

Tottenham will play at Wembley next term while their ground is rebuilt but Spurs expect to be in their new home for the 2018-19 season.
