The Government of Kenya has tightened university admission rules to help seal the loopholes used by students to enroll in universities without the required minimal qualifications.

Speaking on Friday to the standard the Commission for University Education (CUE) chairperson Chacha Nyaigotti said that ordinary diploma papers, bridging courses and foreign qualifications will no longer be used to admit students in Kenyan universities.

This move has also seen those trying to seek admission using P1 certificate locked out. According to him, this will allow only students with C+ (Plus) and above get admitted to Kenya’s universities, either private or public university.

This has locked out a number of diploma students who scored below C+ and thought that by doing a diploma is an avenue to get admitted to the university.

It is now clear that only the Kenya National Examination Council (KNEC) diploma certificates will be used by the students to get admission to the university.

The universities which have been affected by the pointed rot in universities have been given a month to explain how they are going to deal with the rot or else they will be barred from admitting students.

According to Education Cabinet Secretary Dr. Fred Matiang’I Universities in Kenya have tolerated serious academic breaches making the some of the degrees acquired by students to be nullified because they don’t meet the required standards.

The CUE audit report shows that last year, that is 2016, there were some 539,749 students enrolled in public and private universities. This compares to 440,840 representing an increase of an additional 98,909 this year.
