What was supposed to be a peaceful club meeting at the Nyayo National Stadium turned chaotic yesterday after Gor Mahia officials sharply disagreed on the draft constitution.
Surprisingly, club chairman Ambrose Rachier who had called the meeting did not turn up raising doubts over his commitment to hold elections this year.
Rachier had last Thursday invited branch chairmen and secretaries to yesterday’s meeting that was supposed to discuss and make amendments to the draft constitution, which would then be tabled during the club’s Special General Meeting (SGM).
However, no agreement could be reached yesterday after the draft was opposed on the floor.
In opposing the document, the branch officials said they had neither seen nor received copies of the draft upfront and there was no way they could discuss a document they had not seen.
At this point the meeting degenerated into a shouting match prompting it to be called off.
An irate Dan Oketch, who is contesting for the chairman’s position, blamed the melee on the executive whom he said wanted the meeting to fail. “I fail to understand how a meeting will be called and the chairman fails to attend. He should have been here to address the delegates. If he can’t lead, he should simply leave,” he said.
The club’s organising secretary David Kilo, who was driving the exercise said they will call another meeting in a week’s time after the branch officials have received the document and gone through it with their members.
“It didn’t make sense for us to continue with the proceedings yet most people didn’t have the draft document. We have made arrangements to ensure that each gets a copy and goes through after which a meeting will be called,” Kilo said.
Yesterday's chaotic meeting came barely a week after the SGM failed to take place under unclear circumstances last weekend.
