Varsity chaos in second day as students defy vacate order

Chaos at Laikipia University continued for the second day yesterday after students defied an order to leave the institution.

The university, located in Nyahururu, was closed down indefinitely on Monday after students went on the rampage to protest what they claimed was a move by the institution to offer courses not recognised by the Commission for University Education (CUE).

But the institution has refuted the claims. The two courses in question are biochemistry science and bio-medicine science.

Yesterday, the learners engaged police in running battles for the better part of the day.

They blocked the busy Nyahururu-Nakuru highway, causing a heavy traffic snarl-up.

But speaking to the Press, vice chancellor Francis Lelo played down the students' claims, saying the two courses were certified by CUE. He said students taking the two courses were using facilities at Egerton University in Njoro and Nyahururu District Hospital.
