Musician Chelele most trending topic in January

The late musician Diana Chemutai Chelele drew the most hits on Google in January.

According to Google Search Trends that indicates patterns over a period of time, information on the late Chelele was the most searched followed by the Independent Electoral Boundary Commission (IEBC), Kenya Defence Forces and the FA Cup.

Chelele, who was the darling of the Kalenjin community, was found dead in her Kapkwen home on January 9 in unclear circumstances, with her husband eventually being linked to her alleged murder.

"The IEBC was also a keen point of interest for Kenyans as they went online to find out available jobs, ahead of next year's polls after the release of their Sh45 billion strategic plan," said Google in a statement.

Due to unclear information surrounding the attack on Kenyan soldiers in Somalia, many are said to have turned to Google for answers thereby making KDF the third most trending search.

"The KDF piqued the interest of Kenyans after the terror group was attacked in its camp in El-Adde, Somalia, killing an unknown number of soldiers," said the statement.

Fourth on the list of most trending searches was the FA Cup - an annual competition in English football - as fans went online to find out more about match schedule, fixtures and results.

English singer and songwriter David Bowie appeared on the list as the fifth most trending search following many controversial theories surrounding his death.

Popular Mugithi singer Salim Junior followed suit after his unexpected death on January 23.

Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe came seventh after rumours of his death surfaced.

Others in the top ten were American film house Netflix, Kenyan rapper Prezzo who received a bashing after his comical interview with KTN' Betty Kyalo, and English actor Alan Rickman, known for his role in the famous Harry Potter Films after he died on January 14.

In the how-to category, 'How to calculate safe days' was the most trending.
