TNA MPs issue threat to take over leadership

Kenya: The National Alliance (TNA) MPs have demanded that party leaders organise a retreat for members within two weeks to discuss its future.

Kieni MP Kanini Kega said MPs allied to the party will organise a parliamentary group retreat on January 28 if party leaders fail to do so.

"We have no option but to demand this meeting from the party leaders because TNA has been experiencing wrangles that are threatening its integrity," Mr Kega said.

He said recent wrangles witnessed in Nyeri County were caused by lack of leadership.

"We have had party chairmen at the county and constituency level being involved in conflicts with branch officials and elected members and this has publicly brought shame to the party," he said.

Kega alleged that some party branches were being managed by people being groomed to take over from some current elected leaders.

"We will come up with resolutions that will affect the party leadership structures for the sake of the future of the party," he said.

He noted that the current leadership has not organised the meeting because they are afraid of being replaced.

"We must hold our party leaders accountable because there is need for changes to ensure strong party structures," Kega charged.

He said MPs would take over the party's leadership from the ward level if the current leaders fail to meet their demands.

"We are willing to ask the Parliamentary Service Commission to withhold the party contributions until the leaders of the party take a more proactive role in party affairs and give members direction," Kega warned.
